Athlete of the Week: Margot Besnard
Mount Greylock goalkeeper Margot Besnard had a big week for her Mounties, helping them to go 4-0, including a big win over Hoosac Valley which clinched the South Division title for her team.
The senior started off the week by making five saves in a 4-2 win over Drury on Tuesday. Besnard then made four saves before leaving the net to score a second-half goal in Greylock's 7-0 victory over Mount Everett on Wednesday.
She then made two stops in another win over the Eagles on Friday before freshman Charlotte Rand took over in goal in the second half.
Besnard finished off the week by anchoring her Mountie defense in their 2-1 win over Hoosac Valley. The Hurricanes controlled the play of the game, but Besnard was instrumental in keeping their scorers at bay, coming up big on many of Hoosac's scoring chances. She made point-blank saves, punched balls out on corner kicks and deflected shots over the crossbar.
"Margot has developed into the county's best goalie this year and our South Division title clinching win over Hoosac Valley last Saturday highlights this fact," Greylock head coach Tom Ostheimer said, "Margot also provides a spark for our offense with booming punts and long goal kicks. She is and has been, for the past two years, an inspirational leader of the team as a player and captain this year."
The most goals that Besnard has surrendered in a single game this year is two, given her a goals against average of less than one goal per game. Greylock will look for Besnard to continue her stellar play as they make a push into the Western Mass. playoffs.
