Fit to Be Tied: Wahconah, Pittsfield Girls Play to Another Draw

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield and Wahconah play for the second time in three days and finish with the same outcome, 2-2, Monday night, on Pittsfield´s Senior Night.

 

These two teams are no strangers playing only a couple days ago to a 2-2 draw. Monday had the same outcome although with a little extra excitement with the Senior Night activities.

 

Pittsfield came out strong from the opening whistle, really controlling the game with some good passing inside and out. They looked to exploit the back line of Wahconah with short passes leading to a long ball down the line. For most of the first half the only thing missing was the final touch and that finally came when Jamie Duquette was able to win a header and calmly control the ball and slot it in the back of the net. 

 

“Jamie is such a big factor whenever she is on the field. I saw a lot of things in her practice that translated well to playing a center forward, even though I believe she has played defense her whole life,” Pittsfield coach Hal Asher said. “She brings a lot of composure, especially in that role. She fought hard for the 50/50 ball and still had the awareness to put it in the back of the net.”

 

It didn’t take Wahconah too long to respond after allowing the goal as they started to ramp up the attack. Shortly after Wahconah was able to get a ball up and over the last defender's head and it was a foot race for the finish that was nicely placed in the corner to level the scoring at 1-1. Wahconah stayed on the front foot and almost got a second on the night, but it was pushed just wide of the net. The two went into the halftime whistle leveled at one goal apiece. 

 

Pittsfield started off the second half with momentum once again, getting the crowd involved to help cheer them on. The Generals started slowly building up play with nice short passes trying to find any way to unlock this Wahconah defense. Then, just minutes into the second half Pittsfield played a ball in over the top of the defense and was taken cleanly off the volley for a beautiful goal right over the keeper's head to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. 

 

Just as it started to look like Pittsfield was going to get their senior night win. Wahconah won a free kick outside the box off to the right of the goal and smashed it up and over the keeper into the far corner. It was destined for these two teams to draw once again and after a cagey final 15 minutes that’s how it ended, a 2-2 draw for the second time this year. 

 

“I think the Senior Night played a big role, especially with their fellow PHS students supporting them,” Asher said. “They fought so hard and we almost had a chance to steal the game toward the end. I look forward to maintaining this momentum and goal-scoring throughout the last portion of the season.”

 

Pittsfield will take on Hampshire next while Wahconah will host Chicopee Comp on Thursday.
