Wahconah Girls Blank Mount Greylock
DALTON, Mass. -- The Wahconah girls soccer team earned its fifth straight win Thursday evening under the lights in a 4-0 battle with Mount Greylock.
Wahconah came out strong in the first half, controlling the majority of the play. It was able to quickly move the ball up the field and beat Greylock’s defense with its speed up front.
Their first goal came 20 minutes in after Asi Graham passed the ball just inside the 6. Bethany Houle finished it to open the scoring 1-0.
With less than 15 minutes remaining in the half, Graham once again played a beautiful ball into the box; Bridget Lussier was able to get a head on it to earn the goal, putting Wahconah up 2-0 going into the second half.
Greylock came out a lot more aggressive in the second half looking to come back. The Mounties had some great opportunities, and they were putting the ball on net, but Wahconah goalie Jamie Downer did not let anything slide.
“Greylock’s a tough team,” Wahconah coach Pat West said. “They’re quick, they’re aggressive and they know what to do with the ball.”
The second half was a back and forth battle between the two teams and Greylock, even after Wahconah’s next two goals, did not let down.
“We’re playing better than the score indicates,” Greylock coach Tom Ostheimer said. “We're not taking advantage of the opportunities we have to score goals.”
Greylock played a fast pace game towards the end of the second half in hopes to put a few goals on net, but Wahconah’s defense was unstoppable.
Wahconah sweeper Maddie Sprague had an outstanding performance in the back field; putting a stop to every long ball Greylock played and shutting down nearly every breakaway Greylock’s offense had.
“She’s outstanding,” West said. “I can’t give her enough credit.”
Wahconah’s final goals came late in the game.
Graham put one in from just outside the 18 that sailed over keeper Charlotte Rand's head with 5 minutes remaining. Lussier earned the final goal off a ball the tipped Rand's hands in the final minute.
Mount Greylock will travel to Lenox Monday night, and Wahconah will travel to Pittsfield the same day for a 4 p.m. start.
