Wahconah Edges Hoosac Valley

CHESHIRE, Mass. – Brooke Harrington scored in the 64th minute Friday to snap a 2-2 tie and send the Wahconah girls soccer team on to a 3-2 win over Hoosac Valley.

 

Kathryn Perrone scored a pair of goals for Wahconah, which found itself in a back-and-forth battle on the scoreboard despite carrying the play for most of the contest.

 

Wahconah ended up with a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal, but the Hurricanes erased deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 before Harrington was able to provide a margin that Hoosac Valley could not overcome.

 

Perrone got the game’s first goal on a corner kick, the first of two set piece goals for the visitors.

 

Marleigh White provided the assist, and Perrone finished to give Wahconah a lead just five minutes into the game.

 

Hoosac Valley answered about five minutes later.

 

Ashlyn Lesure somehow was able to sneak a shot between the goal post and keeper Edrie Collins (two saves) from deep on the right wing to level the score, 1-1.

 

In the 22nd minute, Perrone continued a high-scoring first half by firing a shot from about 12 yards that eluded keeper Emma Meczywor (10 saves).

 

The defenses took over from there, keeping it a 2-1 contest into half-time.

 

The Hurricanes’ attack was hampered when Lesure went down and had to leave the game after a collision in the 37th minute. She did not return until the 51st minute.

 

But Hoosac Valley did get the equalizer about a minute before her return when Maryn Capiello converted a direct free kick from about 40 yards that skipped in front of Collins and into the goal.

 

But Wahconah, which piled up corner kick opportunities all afternoon, got its second conversion with 16 minutes, 36 seconds on the clock.

 

The service from the left wing corner was punched out of the 6 by Meczywor. But Wahconah’s  Gianna Heilbroun played it to Samie Kaley about 20 yards from the goal on the right side. Kaley’s shot was deflected by Harrington past a diving Meczywor and inside the near post to give Wahconah a 3-2 lead it never relinquished.

 

Wahconah (2-11-1) hosts Drury on Monday.

 

Hoosac Valley finishes the regular season at 4-10-1 and waits to learn who it will face in the quarter-finals of the Western Massachusetts Class D Tournament.
