CHESHIRE, Mass. -- Considering the circumstances the Hoosac Valley girls’ soccer team was in going into Thursday afternoon’s game, coach Kristen Holmgren was pleased with the girls' performance and the players who stepped up when their team was in need.

Hoosac goalie senior Megan Richardson is currently out due to a mild concussion leaving the team without a goalie. Sophomore Madison Graves, who has some experience from playing on junior varsity stepped up in the first half for Hoosac and sophomore Kailynne Frederick filled in for the second half of the game.

Combined the two sophomores allowed Wahconah to put in six goals; but Holmgren, despite the 6-2 loss, was proud of the two for stepping in.

“They came out and really helped us when we needed them,” Holmgren said.

Wahconah’s offense dominated the majority of the first half, running the score up 3-0 before Hoosac could put one in. The goals came from Emma Cote and two from Perin Genaway; Adrian McKnight and Katie Dumas earning the assists on her goals.

With 10 minutes remaining in the half senior Marissa Felter was able to send a ball through Wahconah’s defense to sophomore Lily Kronick, who finished it giving Hoosac its first goal.

Wahconah scored two more times before the end of the half with goals coming from Bridget Lussier and Dumas, assisted by Genaway.

Hoosac went into the second half down, 5-1, but had a lot of opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net.

“They came out, had some great passes, some great plays and did the best I ever thought we could in the situation we’re in,” Holmgren said.

Wahconah added one more to the board 20 minutes into the half off a beautiful cross from Emmy Cote just outside of the 18; Asi Graham was able to get a touch on the ball and finish it.

Despite the score; Hoosac didn’t let down. It battled to the end and continued to push the ball up the field. Its service was good, giving the Canes numerous chances. Kronick put its final goal in the net off of a cross from Ellie Field.

The Hurricanes walked away with a 6-2 loss, but reacted well to it considering the circumstances they were in going into the game.

“We gave it our all,” senior McKenzie Robinson said. “We held our composure, but we just have to stay healthy.”

Hoosac will travel to Taconic on Monday and Wahconah hosts Pioneer Friday at 6 p.m.
