McCann Outlasts St. Mary's for 6th Straight Win
WESTFIELD, Mass. — It wasn't a shutout, but second-half goals by junior Eileen Zajac and freshman Monique Martel assured the McCann Tech girls' soccer team of a 4-3 win over St. Mary's on Tuesday.Playing its second game in as many days, the Hornets (6-0, 5-0) started off a little slow, allowing the Saints' Monica Peterson to put the hosts up 1-0 in the 17th minute of play. Senior forward Mary Nguyen countered with a pair of goals in an eight-minute span later in the half, however, and McCann carried that same 2-1 lead into halftime.
The Hornets continued their surge into the second half, bumping the score up to 3-1 on an unassisted tally by Zajac just two and half minutes in. Martel then scored her third goal of the season with 13 minutes to play, giving what McCann head coach Mike Dowling thought was a comfortable three-goal lead.
St. Mary's Darby Bailey, who assisted on her team's first goal of the game, took advantage of the Hornets' substitutes, however, and scored two goals in a span of 90 seconds to pull the Saints within one. Dowling put his starters back in, though, and McCann was able to pull out its sixth win in a row.
Junior Alex Wood finished with four saves in goal for the Hornets, while fellow keeper Francesca DePergola stopped 12 shots for St. Mary's.
McCann next host Mount Everett at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
