McCann Girls Win Playoff Opener
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The fourth-seeded McCann Tech girls soccer team defeated No. 13 Smith Voc, 5-0, Monday afternoon in the first round of the Division 4 Western Massachusetts soccer tournament.
McCann opened the scoring in the 26th minute off a goal from senior Allexia Andrews. Monique Martel took a shot from outside the 18 that deflected off a Smith defender, Andrews was able to gain control of the ball and get a shot off that was placed low and to the far corner.
The next two goals came from Allie Gibeau at minute 9:14 and 1:20; both similar plays. McCann worked the ball up the field and pushed it to the wings; they got down to the corner and sent the ball into the 18 where Gibeau was open and set for the shots. Junior Jordan Reinhardt earned the assist on the first goal.
“We used the wings and spread the field out well,” McCann coach Mike Dowling said. “We were working to get the ball to the 18, because they were packing their girls inside the six and we had someone open and that’s how Allie got those two goals.”
McCann went into the second half up 3-0.
Four minutes into the second half Andrews found the back of the net again, this time off a pass from freshman Aimee Dowling. Andrews received the ball and carried it right into the six and beat the goalie on a shot to the low corner.
McCann controlled the play throughout the second half, but Smith did push the ball up the field a few times with their speed and was able to get a few shots on net. McCann goalie Alanza Quinones let nothing past her and senior sweeper Charlea Schleich continued to push the ball up the field.
“They’re a fast team, but I think we kind of took that away with our little short passing game,” Dowling said. “Defense played well; CJ’s [Schleich] really good back there and can stay with the faster girls.”
