McCann Defense Secures Second Straight Shutout
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The defense of the McCann Tech girls' soccer team was at it again on Tuesday, shutting down Commerce 5-0 to earn its second shutout in a row. The Hornets have outscored their opponents 11-0 over the past two games, helping Mike Dowling's club continue its recent four-game winning streak. While senior Mary Nguyen did most of the scoring against Westfield Voc. on Friday, it was a much more balanced effort that brought McCann (11-1, 9-0) the victory on Tuesday. Junior Eileen Zajac started things off for the Hornets in the fifth minute, scoring off of a feed from classmate Jordan Prevey.
Nguyen then got on the board 14 minutes later, scoring unassisted for her 26th goal of the year. That left Nguyen two points shy of matching Heather Malloy's school record of 118 career points, something she quickly accomplished by assisting on Alex Lincoln's goal in the 25th minute and C.J. Schleich's strike with 90 seconds left in the game. Nguyen will try to break the school record on Wednesday when the Hornets host St. Joe's at 4 p.m.
In between Nguyen's record-tying points, senior Alexa Durant made it 3-0 by scoring off of a pass from sophomore Morgan Roy. Junior Alex Wood made five saves in goal to earn McCann's sixth shutout of the year. Keeper Kendra Williams stopped eight shots in a losing effort for the Red Raiders.
