Drury, Lenox Athletes Earn Weekly Honors
One of this week's Athletes of the Week has her team picking up right where it left off a year ago.
The other has his team pointed in a new direction and looking to better days ahead.
Lenox senior Nicole Gamberoni and the Millionaires girls soccer team have opened the year 2-0 in impressive fashion, outscoring each of their first two opponents by 5-0 margins.
Last year, Lenox opened the season 2-4-1 before catching fire and winning 12 games, going all the way to the Western Massachusetts Division 4 final.
Gamberoni was second on the team in scoring a year ago, and she leads the way this year with two goals and two assists.
Lenox has a tough test this week against a resurgent Drury squad Wednesday and unbeaten Mount Greylock on Friday.
The new football season has been good to the old Berkshire County League, which went 6-0 against the Pioneer Valley on Friday and Saturday. Throw in McCann Tech, and county teams were 7-0 outside the county with two squads -- Mount Greylock and Hoosac Valley -- playing an intracounty thriller.
Nowhere was the Week 1 win more welcome than at Drury, which won just one game a year ago.
Last year, the Blue Devils started with a 40-16 loss to Smith Vocational. On Saturday, the Blue Devils turned the tables, routing the Vikings 44-8 behind 140 yards rushing and 76 yards passing by Obilio Rodriguez.
The senior QB accounted for two rushing touchdowns and two throwing touchdowns.
