Devils Blank Eagles to Win Second Straight
SHEFFIELD, Mass. -- A pair of first-half goals and some steady defense all game long carried the Drury girls' soccer team to a 2-0 win at Mount Everett on Thursday.Junior Chelsea DeGroff and senior Mariah Ferrara scored a pair of goals six minutes apart off of assists from sophomore Cori Ghidotti to account for all of the scoring in the game. DeGroff struck first, sending in a beautiful left-footed shot into the opposite corner of the net in the 26th minute of play. Ferrara then came through just six minutes later for her team-leading sixth goal of the year.
"This game was played on an extremely small field, and it took our group awhile to adjust to the size," Blue Devils head coach Molly Meczywor said. "Cori moved the ball extremely well, and our offensive line really started to move and create space for each other. Danielle Racette and her defense played very well, thwarting any offensive threats."
The Drury offense created a 26-9 advantage in shots in the game. In addition to Racette's efforts, junior midfielder Laryssa Lapointe also had one of her better games on the defensive end. Junior goalie Ali Tatro also came through with five saves to earn her fourth shutout of year for the Devils (3-2-1). Sam Hoover and Natasha McLear combined to make 12 saves in net for the Eagles (2-5).
Drury next hosts Mount Anthony at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
