Moulton, Tietgens Lead Drury Past Taconic

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Drury High School girls’ soccer team earned its second win Tuesday afternoon in a 5-0 shutout against Taconic.

Drury’s Jenna Moulton and Jill Tietgens were quite the dynamic duo up front for the Devils; combining for four of Drury’s five goals.

Tietgens opened the scoring nine minutes into the first half off a cross from Moulton right in front of the net that she was able to get a touch on to ensure a Devils first goal. About 10 minutes later the roles were reversed in the same exact play; Tietgens crossed the ball to Moulton right in front of the Taconic net to give Drury the 2-0 lead.

“They did exactly what we were telling them to do,” Drury coach Maryann Rumbolt said. “We said this is where we need you to be, when we need you to be there and they did exactly that.”

Rumbolt continued, “Our midfielders sent the ball up, we said as soon as you have it you need to look for them and send the through ball.”

With five minutes remaining in the first half a Taconic player let a shot go from outside the 18 that hit the crossbar and deflected off of Drury goalie Heather Morris into the net; but the referee called no goal due to where it hit on the bar. This sent the Devils into the second half ahead 2-0.

“Going into the second half I told them that Taconic is pumping themselves up to come out strong,” Rumbolt said. “I told them we need to come out stronger and think of it as a 0-0 game and just keep pushing.”

Drury did just that, scoring three more goals in the second.

The first of the three came from the Moulton, Tietgens duo yet again. It came ten minutes in after Moulton received a ball from the midfield and carried it up the sideline; she found space in Taconic defense and sent the ball through to Tietgens who placed it on net to put the score at 3-0.

Two minutes later Miranda Wissman got in on the scoring off a pass from Moulton who carried the ball into the box and found Wissman wide open just inside of the 18.

Drury’s final goal came in the last two minutes of the game. Moulton let one go from outside the 18 that hit the goal post and deflected into the net. Olivia Carlson earned the assist.

“The progress we’ve made from our first game to this game is wonderful,” Rumbolt said. “It’s really boosting the girls up.”

The Devils look to carry today’s momentum into their home game Thursday against Lee at 4 p.m.
