Lenox Girls Soccer Edges Drury in High-Scoring Affair
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Drury High School girls soccer team saw a glimpse of what it’s like to be the ones dominating on the offensive side of the game, Wednesday afternoon, but it fell just short of a win.
Drury has battled with the best in their first few games of the season and although Lenox took away the 4-3 win today, the Blue Devils are finally finding what works for them.
“We figured out what we needed to do, we moved the ball where we needed to move it and we were actually able to get a lot of shots off,” coach Maryjane Rumbolt said. “It really boosted our confidence and the girls are happy.”
Drury did indeed get off a lot of shot -- a few that could have led to their first win. But Lenox goalie Lindsey Kelly had a stellar performance.
Lenox opened up the scoring in the first half from an outside cross that slipped through Drury goalkeeper Heather Morris’ hands; Kate Hedges was able to get a touch on it into the net.
Just after their first goal, Sandra Arace took the ball right up the middle of the field and finished a shot to the low right corner of the net.
Lenox was up 2-0 at half.
Drury came out in the second half eager to finish and find the back of the net, and that they did.
Junior Jill Tietgens scored Drury’s first goal of the game, 3 minutes into the second half.
The Devils continued to move the ball and work it up the field; Katie Toomey tied the game up off of a cross right inside the 6 from Miranda Wissman that Lenox goalie bobbled.
The score remained 2-2 until the 14th minute when Arace once again found the back of the net, putting Lenox up 3-2.
With 5 minutes to go Lenox scored once more off a corner kick that the Drury defense couldn’t clear. Mollie Herrick was able to get a touch on the ball amidst the scramble in front of the net. Drury responded quickly off of another cross from Wissman to Toomey bringing the score to 4-3 and boosting up the Devils' energy on the field and sidelines.
Drury saw one more chance to tie the game with 2 minutes remaining. Wissman carried the ball up the field and fired a shot to the left corner that nearly missed the net.
“I just knew I should hit it low and on the ground,” Wissman said, “but I hit it too far outside and just missed.”
The Devils (0-4) look to carry over the energy and momentum to its first win Thursday afternoon at Taconic. Lenox (1-3) will host Hampden Charter School Friday afternoon.
