NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Hannah Murphy scored 10 times Tuesday, to lead the Monson girls soccer team to an 11-6 win over Drury in the season opener for both teams.

“We played a solid first half keeping them to a small lead,” Drury coach Sy Uqdah said. “In the second half the other team stepped into a higher gear than we did, resulting in them putting in another four goals in the second half. Our goalie Addie [Shepard] played very well, making many saves. She kept us in the game and played great. Moving forward we need to work on our speed and passes need to be improved upon.”

Megan McGrath and Hannah LaCasse each scored a goal for Drury, which got a goal and an assist apiece from Madison Saunders and Ella Bond.

Hailie Haskins set up one goal for the Blue Devils, but the reigning Division 5 State Champions proved to be a tall order.

“Overall, we played a great game the other team just stepped into a higher gear than us,” Uqdah said. “We saw what we need to improve upon and will work towards that as the year progresses.”

Drury (0-1) is home on Monday against Monument Mountain.
