Lenox Boys Come Back to Beat Drury
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Lenox boys soccer team walked away with a win Thursday evening after quickly going down 1-0 in the first 40 seconds of their game against Drury.
The Millionaires turned things around in the 18th minute and were able to hold that momentum throughout the remainder of the game for a 4-1 win.
The Blue Devils' goal came from senior Logan Rumbolt after a ball was slotted through the Lenox defense; Rumbolt was able to get a touch on it and send it to the left corner, out of reach for Lenox's goalie.
Drury held the 1-0 lead until the 18th minute when Lenox received a free kick and quickly sent it towards goal, putting it on net. Nick Montelone took the kick to tie it one.
"We have a young team this year, so whenever we're down we just try to refocus and make sure we put our shots on goal and defensively put the ball up," Lenox senior Chas Novitsky said. "So we were able to regroup our team after that first goal. We hate to concede early, but sometimes it's a good motivator to get you going."
The Blue Devils had opportunities but came up short with the few that they had.
Their speed up front between Rumbolt and senior Jake Daughtery were positive factors, but their game quickly changed in the second half after going down 2-1.
With less than two minutes to go in the first, a penalty was called on Drury in their defensive end, rewarding Lenox with a penalty kick.
Nick Heim set up for the shot and sent it to the right corner, giving his team the lead going into half.
Lenox came out hungry in the second half, looking to add more, and Drury's game switched to a much more defensive style with a few through balls here and there. But it was not enough to tie the game.
With 31 minutes on the clock, Nic Baruch let one fly from 15 yards out of the 18-yard box, putting Lenox up 3-1.
Its final goal came with six minutes remaining; Michael Abdalla did the honors.
Drury goalkeeper Brian Christian had a standout game in net with 13 saves. Lenox was hammering the shots in the second half and Christian held them to only two second half goals.
He was backed up by his defense as well; Danny Alvarez to be exact who stepped in and saved a shot while Christian was down.
"It was Brian's best game in two years; I've been a coach for two years, and Brian stepped up and made some great saves today," Drury coach John Jacobbe said. "Every goal was a great goal by Lenox, so he protected his goal well today; when he came off his line one time, Danny Alvarez covered the goal.
"He's working really hard to get better, it's tough on a 4-1 loss, but he had a great game."
Drury (0-8-2) will continue the battle for their first win on Tuesday evening against Hoosac, who they've seen twice this year in a 1-1 tie and a 1-0 loss.
Lenox (4-2-1) hosts Hoosac Valley Friday at 6 p.m.
