Mount Greylock, Pittsfield Boys Tie

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Mount Greylock and Pittsfield boys soccer teams battled exhaustion and each other to earn a 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon.

 

Mount Greylock was playing its fourth game in seven days, and the Generals were playing their second game in 24 hours.

"Despite the fatigue, both teams played hard for all 80 minutes, and it was a very open and entertaining game even though only two goals were scored," Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils said.

 

The Mounties (7-3-2) opened the scoring with a goal in the first minute by Benni McComish.

 

"It was a relief to get on the board so quickly," Dils said. "Eric Hirsch--who was very dangerous all day--made a great end line run and passed the ball to the top of the box. Benni [McComish] hit a firm one-timer that eluded the keeper. It was Benni's first goal of the season, so it was nice to see him finally get into the scoring column given how hard he works."

 

Pittsfield got the equalizer in the 24th minute out of a scramble in front of Mounties goalkeeeper Cal Filson (five saves).

 

Mount Greylock earned a 26-11 advantage in shots and had some strong second-half chances, but its best scoring opportunity went by the boards when Ian Brink's rebound of a Hirsch shot deflected off Hirsch and away from the goal.

 

Mount Greylock is back on the road on Monday, traveling to Lenox.

 

"We'll relish the day off tomorrow and look to come back strong against Lenox on Monday night," Dils said. "With only six games left in the regular season for us, it's time for our team to jump up a level by reducing our goals against, scoring more goals, and playing hard for 80 minutes."
