Mount Greylock Boys Tie Chicopee
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Ian Brink scored early in the second half to help the Mount Greylock Regional High School boys soccer team tie Chicopee, 1-1, on Friday night at the Mount Greylock Invitational.
Brink scored on a low volley off a long assist from Eric Hirsch, and Cal Filson made five saves to keep the Mounties (1-0-1) unbeaten heading into tonight's contest against Vermont's Burr & Burton Academy.
"Eric [Hirsch] had driven in a few good balls off of direct kicks in the first half so we went with him again in the second half. Ian went forward to try to get a head on the ball but instead it fell right to his feet and he pounded home the volley low and through traffic," Mount Greylock coach Blair Dils said.
Dils said the Mounties had trouble getting untracked early in the game but rallied against a strong Chicopee side.
"The result tonight was a fair result. Both teams had about equal chances. Chicopee dominated the first 10 minutes but we settled in, found our rhythm, and started to get to goal more frequently," he said. "Our increased intensity led to our goal, which was deserved.
"Chicopee is a class club. Tom Rivet does a great job with his players. Even though they're not quite as strong as last year's team, they are still organized and highly competitive. We won't lose too much sleep about only getting a tie with a team like Chicopee."
