Holbrook Boys Upset Mount Greylock in Division 5
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Holbrook boys soccer team Tuesday converted a free kick with 12 minutes left to upset No. 12 Mount Greylock in the first round of the Division 5 State Tournament.
The Mounties struck first when Simon Shin took a pass from Everett Crowe and lofted the ball over the goalkeeper’s head in the 12th minute of play.
“In the first half, the Mount Greylock backline did a good job of holding the speedy frontline of Holbrook,” Mounties coach Mike Russo said. “Until a failed clearance fell to their midfielders, who volleyed it into the upper half of the Greylock goal to tie the match about 10 minutes left in the half.”
Russo said his side came out with intensity in the second half but was never able to put a go-head goal across.
And after the Holbrook goal? “Mount Greylock valiantly tried to equalize in the final 12 minutes but was thwarted by the Holbrook back line,” Russo said.
Mount Greylock finishes the season with a record of 8-11 and a Western Massachusetts Class C Championship.
Holbrook (14-6), which beat Hoosac Valley in the preliminary round, moves on to face Maynard, a 3-0 winner over Turners Falls on Tuesday, in the Round of 16.
