The Wahconah girls soccer team took home the Division 3 Western Massachusetts title Saturday afternoon at Westfield State University in a 1-0 victory of No. 6 Granby.

Wahconah now heads to the state semi-finals, where they will face the Central Massachusetts Champions: Nipmuc High School, who finished with a 2-1 victory in their Central Mass final game.

Nipmuc (20-1-1) earned the second seed in the Central Mass Division and went into the finals with nine consecutive shutouts and 17 for the season.

Wahconah coach Pat West knows of Nipmuc’s speed up front and “potent scorers” as well as its strong defense. The team has 67 goals and a total of seven scored against them.

“We know they move the ball quickly and aggressively and they will be a challenge to contain,” West said. “We have to try to continue playing our game; moving the ball to the outside and denying opportunities on the defensive side.”

In Wahconah’s Western Mass title game it did this very well. West's squad moved the ball outside and continued to send it into the box, creating a lot of opportunities, but it couldn’t hit the back of the net. It got its only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining, when Jocelyn Hill let a beautiful shot go from just outside the 18.

They’re doing all the right things that  West is asking of them; they just need to find a way to hit the net.

“Our players have their assignments and they are ready to go,” West said.

Wahconah will travel back to Westfield State Tuesday afternoon for a 5 p.m. start against Nipmuc.
