Rohlfs, O'Connor Earn Athlete of the Week Honors
The fall sports season is only a couple of weeks old, but this week’s iBerkshires.com Athletes of the Week already have made a big impact on soccer scoreboards around Western Massachusetts.
One puts goals in the net, and the other one keeps them out.
Mount Greylock senior netminder Mai O’Connor has been a key to the Mounties’ success for years, and in their first five contests this year, the Mounties have four shutouts.
Perhaps the most impressive game to date for O’Connor and the Mount Greylock defense came on Wednesday, when she made four saves in a 2-0 win over Monument Mountain, a team that averaged more than five goals per game in its first three outings.
On Tuesday, the Mounties (3-0-2) will look to extend their unbeaten record when they visit Hoosac Valley.
The Hoosac Valley boys soccer team ripped off three wins to start the season, scoring 13 goals in the process.
They had just one game this past week, but junior Dylan Rohlfs made the most of the opportunity, scoring five goals and assisting on another in a 6-5 win at rival Drury.
“We’ve got to learn to defend a little better on such a talented player,” Drury coach John Jacobbe said of Rohlfs. “It is impressive, what he’s able to do with how much coverage he has on the field.
“My hat goes off to Dylan today, and we’ll try to do better next time.”
The Blue Devils will get another shot at Hoosac Valley on Oct. 4 when it visits Cheshire.
In the meantime, Rohlfs and the Hurricanes continue their season on Monday against McCann Tech.
