Borelli, Boland Earn Athlete of the Week Honors
Two high school soccer programs that struggled in 2015 have soared at the start of the 2016 campaign, and our Athletes of the Week are two of the reasons why.
At Taconic, senior Kristen Borelli has scored three goals to help her team to a 2-0 start.
Last year, Taconic won two games all season, scoring 20 goals in the process; Borelli was the leading scorer with seven. In the first week of the season, Taconic (2-0) scored 10 times in two games and will be looking for more this week with dates against Lenox, Mount Everett and rival Pittsfield.
At Drury, the turnaround for the boys soccer program has been just as dramatic.
A year ago, the Blue Devils won two games and scored 10 goals all season.
In Week 1 of the 2016 campaign, Drury won three games and scored 14 goals.
Junior Jon Boland has scored in each game and has six goals and two assists on the young season.
Drury (3-0) faces some big tests this week with dates against Mount Everett on Tuesday and Hoosac on Thursday. Last year, Drury was 0-4-1 against those two teams. Then again, the Blue Devils already own 2016 wins against three programs (Taconic, St. Joe and Greenfield) that beat them last year.
