NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — A big second half effort pushed Westfield Tech past McCann Tech, 3-0, on Friday afternoon in the Hornets Nest.

It was a quiet first half for both teams on the offensive end with only a few chances created between them. Ten minutes into the game, WTA (8-0-1) had the best chance of the half with an over-the-head flick that was pushed up over the bar by McCann Tech keeper Devon Griswold.

The following corner kick provided Westfield Tech with its second chance as it hit the post, and McCann tech was able to clear the ball out of danger. The visitors had most of the pressure throughout the game, sending countless long balls hoping for a quick break to goal.

The Hornets, though pressured for the majority of the half, stayed composed and kept their shape, searching for the right times to counter attack. It wasn’t until the end of the half when McCann Tech (6-2-1) got its first attempt on goal combined with a little possession. The game went into the break all tied up at zeros.

Second half action kicked off with McCann’s best effort in the game. Michael Wojtaszek was sent a through ball and was able to nick the ball before the goalie just going wide of the net.

The stalemate finally was broken 21 minutes into the second half with a WTA free kick from past the half way line. The ball soared through the air and rolled under Griswold’s legs. It was a tough break for the McCann keeper, who made some key saves, including a penalty kick later in the second half and finished with 11 stops total.

“That long kick slipped through our keepers legs, it happens, it’s soccer.” McCann Tech coach Tom Bona said. “That long ball really took the steam out of us and then they got another goal in five minutes, and another in five minutes.”

This seemed like all Westfield Tech needed to continue to control the game and finally put McCann out of it. Yermey Kovyliak added the second goal minutes later after the ball was bouncing around in the box just long enough for him to strike one in the lower corner.

The icing on the cake came with nine minutes left as Westfield’s leading goal scorer, Brad Marion, added another one to seal the victory.

This was McCann Tech’s second straight loss going seven games without a defeat to start the year.

“It was a long tough week, next week we have two home games we’ll be able to recuperate and heal up a little bit more,” Bona said.

McCann Tech will host St Mary’s on Monday and Westfield will play Pathfinder at home the same day.
