Westfield Voc Scores Early, Often at McCann
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Last year, the McCann Tech and Westfield Voc boys soccer teams finished last season with two games that took 180 minutes and resulted in just one goal.
That was then.
On Friday, Westfield Voc scored its first goal in the fourth minute of play and went on to a 6-0 win to spoil the Hornets' season opener.
Sergiy Kabysh scored twice as the Tigers scored five times from outside the 18-yard box.
"I knew these guys were going to be tough," McCann coach Tom Bona said. "I knew they're a good team.
"The bottom line is they came to win, and we didnt' come to play. A couple of guys played with heart, but I think [Westfield Voc] won 80 percent of the 50/50 balls."
Dominic Rosario got the scoring started at the 3:47 mark when he finished from 25 yards out.
It stayed a one-goal game until about the midway point of the first half, when Kabysh scored his first goal from just outside the 18.
Vitaliy Borodin scored the game's only goal from inside the area five minutes later, beating McCann starting keeper Evan Canales (six saves) from deep on the left wing.
Nico Moreno came on to play the second half, making five saves, but Westfield Voc continued to dominate the play, scoring their fourth goal at the midway point and adding two more in the last 14 minutes.
McCann Tech (0-1) travels to Pathfinder on Monday.
