Two Late Goals Help Franklin Past McCann
TURNERS FALLS, Mass. -- Some losses are harder to take than others. The McCann Tech boys' soccer team wasn't too upset with the way it played in a 5-2 loss to Tri-County powerhouse Commerce on Tuesday. The Hornets' 2-1 loss to Franklin Tech on Friday was different story, however.
That's because Adam Kozik's club outshot the Eagles 19-17 in the match and held a 1-0 lead when freshman Shane Fuller volleyed in a corner kick from senior Nate Gutmann in the 45th minute of play. McCann (2-5-1) carried that same lead with just over 12 minutes to play when a corner kick by Jared Streeter was unable to be cleared, allowing Anthony Chassion to knock in a loose ball in front of the net.
Two minutes and 12 seconds later, Franklin netted the game winner off another loose-ball situation. After a high kick in the goal box forced Hornets' keeper Connor Vazquez (16 saves) to punch a ball back into play, Thomas Anderson scored from just a few feet out to hand McCann its third straight defeat.
"We outplayed this team, but we had one huge unfortunate play that put us away," Kozik said. "Our team deserved at least a tie in this match. There were many calls that didn't go our way, but we kept it together for most of the game. I am proud of our team for their performance and level-headedness."
Freshman midfielder Damon Couture had one of his better games on defense for the Hornets, who will try to regain their winning ways in a 4 p.m. game at Mount Everett on Monday.
