Boyd's Goal Lifts Hornets Past Drury
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The McCann Tech boys soccer team kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Drury.
It was a quick start for the McCann Hornets (4-1-1), finding the back of the net for the game's only goal just three minutes in. The goal was set up after a forced turnover around midfield when Ashton Solomon set up Collin Boyd.
McCann Tech continued the pressure after the goal, controlling most of the possession and keeping Drury pinned in their own half. Drury did a good job on the defensive side staying compact and keeping McCann from getting the second goal. McCann’s head coach Stephen McAllister was happy with the first goal coming early but urged his players to keep attacking in search of the second goal.
“I tried to stay with the game plan and wanted to get more goals because a one goal lead is not a good lead,” McAllister said. “I told them at halftime these are the easiest games to lose, we kept our defense tight at the back and was happy with them not giving up a goal, but we struggled trying to finish and our communication wasn’t where it needed to be.”
Drury had a few chances throughout the first half but was unable to get any real good looks on the McCann defense. With five starters missing for the Blue Devils, the focus seemed to be on keeping McCann out and breaking for that one or two chances they could get on the counter. Although the Hornets couldn’t find a second goal they did a good job being patient while they tried to break Drury down and it led to plenty of chances that, like Mcallister said, they needed to be better at finishing.
A lot of those chances came in the second half from some set pieces whether it was from a corner kick or the few good chances they had from fouls just outside the box. One of the biggest chances came late in the game off a corner kick that was sent to the back post and almost finished if not for a good save from Drury’s keeper Colin Daly. With about 10 minutes left in the game Drury started to grow into the game a bit more on the offensive side with a few good runs from Jorge Bond, but the fire power was just not there to level the game.
McCann will go on the road Thursday to face Westfield Tech, while Drury will look to regroup against Ware at home.
