Racette Game-Winner Lifts Unbeaten Drury Boys
The competitive match took until the 67th minute for Drury to secure the decision. Jonah Miles and Reece Racette scored goals, Jon Boland had two assists and great goalkeeping from Brian Christian for Drury helped keep it close.
Wahconah (0-5) received a goal from Isaac Voltoline and received a great effort from goalkeeper Anthony Dondiego.
The first half of the match was well played as both teams had multiple chances to score and both teams answered those chances with strong defense and dynamic goaltending. Drury’s attacks came mainly through the air as the forwards reviewed pass over the top of the defense and crosses into the Wahconah box from the wings. Wahconah used passing in the middle to open up the wings and eventually quality shots from Drury’s box. Both teams refused to allow a goal in the first half.
The second half started quickly as Jonah Miles scored in the seventh minute. Miles received a pass from Jon Boland on the left wing, created some space against a pair of defenders and struck from outside the 18.
Wahconah answered back in the 26th minute when Isaac Voltoline scored from 25 yards out. Voltoline received a pass from Hayden Contori to net Wahconah’s first of the game, tying the match at 1-1.
Then with 13 minutes left, Drury was able to take the lead once again when Reece Racette took a pass from Boland and chipped the ball over the Wahconah goalkeeper on a play that started with a Connor Clark free kick from Drury's side of the midfield stripe.
This proved to be the last goal of the game.
“We didn’t play our best soccer for 80 minutes” Drury coach John Jacobbe said. “We played solid soccer for about 20 minutes, we have some things we need to work on.”
He commented on a possible let-up in the second half from his team.
"I don't think it's much of a let up as much as it is other teams playing their best against us (Drury)," Jacobbe said. "Wahconah is a very good team, they had a tough early schedule and they played us very competitively today.”
Drury will play Duggan on Thursday.
