Taconic Boys Soccer Gets First Win at Drury
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Drury boys soccer coach John Jacobbe put it very simply after Wednesday afternoon’s 3-1 loss to Taconic: “Little things win ball games, and we are not doing the little things.”
Drury (0-3-2) is still in search of its first win of the season after opening the scoring against Taconic in the first half off a pass from Jonah Miles to Jake Daugherty. The Blue Devils, who have been putting up a fight in their first five games, still can’t grasp that W.
Drury controlled the play early on in the game and took a quick lead; playing long balls and beating Taconic’s defense with their speed up front. But Taconic came out in the second half and adjusted to Drury’s game to earn its first win of the season.
Taconic’s first goal came 6 minutes into the second half on a cross to the top of the 18 from Abdiel Cotto. Cody Latimer was able to one touch the ball into the back of the net to tie the game up.
Taconic took the lead at the 28 minute mark after Nick Gresser put the ball inside the 6. Drury’s goalie and defensive players scrambled for the ball, but Cotto was able to get in the mix and put a foot on it to score their second goal.
What are the little things that the Drury boys’ soccer team isn’t doing?
With 5 minutes remaining in the game, Drury was sent to the corner a total of 6 times. Jacobbe called out set plays from the sidelines, but the team struggled to run them through, which is something he plans to work on. The Blue Devils did have some great opportunities to tie the game at two, but they couldn’t capitalize off of their corners.
Taconic finally got the ball out of its defensive end and put the game away with fewer than 2 minutes remaining off a goal from Gresser. Basile Addy earned the assist.
The week ahead for Drury is one that looks to be promising.
“We’ve got a lot of good games coming up against Southern Division teams,” Jacobbe said. “I think any team in the South can beat any team, and any team can obviously lose to any team in the South, but it’s something we need to be aware of.”
Jacobbe, who is in his first season back after 10 years, stressed to his captains after today’s loss that every season he’s coached there is a defining moment: “You lose a game you think you should of won or you win a game you weren’t expecting to and you rally around it.”
Five games into the season, he hopes today’s loss is that moment for his squad, who will work on putting the little things together in search for their first win Friday against St. Joe.
“We’ve had plenty of chances and there’s a lot of season left,” Jacobbe said. “We need to look forward and focus on Friday.”
Taconic (1-4-1) will host Hoosac Valley Friday afternoon.
