Taconic's Womble, Lee's Kinne Earn Weekly Honors
Both this week's iBerkshires.com/Adams Community Bank Athletes of the Week helped their teams start winning streaks this week.
One got her team back in the hunt for a postseason berth. The other has his team poised for yet another deep playoff run.
Monument Mountain student and Lee girls lacrosse player Lauren Kinne leads the Wildcats with 30 goals this spring.
This week, she helped Lee win four games in five days as the 'Cats got to within two games of .500 with four games left to play.
She started the week with a hat trick in a one-goal win over South Hadley that snapped a three-game losing skid. Then she scored five in a win at Monson and six in a 9-6 win over Pittsfield.
On Saturday, Kinne scored four to lead a balanced attack in a 16-3 win over St. Mary's. On Monday, the Wildcats (5-7) go to Westfield to play St. Mary's again.
Christian Womble and the Taconic baseball team qualified for the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament way back on May 9.
This week, they improved their playoff seed position with wins over Holyoke and Ludlow.
In the former, Womble was 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and threw three scoreless innings on the mound.
In the latter, Womble went 5-for-5 with a double and drove in two runs.
For the season, he is hitting .533 with 24 hits in 45 at-bats. And on the mound, he has a microscopic .47 earned run average and a 6-0 record. He has allowed just two earned runs in 29-2/3 innings and has struck out 58 while walking just 14.
Taconic, which is 12-1 with just a loss to Cheshire, Conn., as the lone blemish on its resume, goes to Cooperstown, N.Y., on Tuesday to play Wahconah.
