Western Mass Soccer Seeds Released
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock Regional High School boys and girls soccer teams each were seeded second and received byes in their respective Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament fields when the seedings were released on Wednesday afternoon.
McCann Tech's boys and Hoosac Valley's girls also received byes into the quarters and will open post-season action in the Western Mass quarters.
The Mount Greylock boys (11-3-4) await the winner of an opening round match between seventh-seeded Wahconah (7-5-4) and Sabis (9-9) in the quarter-finals. The Mounties beat Wahconah by scores of 4-2 and 1-0 in the regular season.
Mount Greylock's boys are on the opposite side of the draw from top-seeded Belchertown, which upended the Mounties last year in the semis.
Eighth-seeded Hoosac (9-6-2) will be playing at home in the first round against Athol (9-6-3) for the right to go on the road and face Belchertown (16-2).
The county's fourth entrant in the Division 3 tourney is Monument Mountain (10-3-5), which is seeded third and has a bye into the quarters, where it will host No. 6 Cathedral (6-7-5), also the recipient of a bye.
In the D-3 girls tournament, Mount Greylock (10-3-3) awaits the winner of an opening round match between No. 7 Taconic (8-8-2) and Athol (7-7-4). The Mounties alrady have a 4-2 win over Taconic on their resume this fall.
If Mount Greylock advances, it could face a rematch with Hoosac Valley in the semi-finals. The third-seeded Hurricanes (13-2-3) open in the quarters against No. 6 Easthampton (11-1-4).
On the other side of the D-3 draw, No. 5 Wahconah (7-6-3) has a bye into the quarters but will be on the road at No. 4 Granby (14-3-1). The road to the finals on that side of the bracket likely goes through No. 1 Hampshire (12-1-3).
In Division 4, the McCann boys (15-0-3) is seeded third and will host either No. 6 Lenox (4-11-3) or No. 11 Holyoke Catholic (9-7-2) in the quarterfinals. Lee's boys (6-12) are seeded 12th in Division 4 and will open at No. 5 Smith Academy (9-6-3) in the first round.
The sixth-seeded McCann girls (14-3-1) host a first round game against Pathfinder (11-5-2) for the right to play No. 3 Gateway (11-3-4) in the quarters.
The D-4 field also includes No. 7 Lenox (3-11-4) and No. 9 Lee (5-11-2).
Pittsfield's boys and girls both open tournament play on their home turf.
The girls (14-3-1) are seeded fifth in the Division 1 tournament and will host No. 12 Renaissance (10-5-3), with the winner slated to go to No. 4 Chicopee (12-3-4) in the quarters. Pittsfield's boys (11-0-7) are seeded fourth in D-1, and they have a bye into the quarters, where they will face No. 5 Minnechaug (9-6-3).
