Henderson's Four TDs Lead Spartans Past McCann Tech
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Monument Mountain continued to dominate as it defeated McCann Tech, 45-6, Friday night on the road.
It was a dream start for the Spartans (4-1) as they took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown to set the mood for the rest of the game with the first of Nick Henderson’s four touchdowns on the night.
It didn’t take Monument long to get back in the end zone as they forced a quick three-and-out on McCann and broke off a big 44 yard touchdown run from Damian Bourdon. This gave Monument a 14-0 lead and with the way the defense was playing there was no way back for McCann.
After another quick stop from the defense of Monument they were able to get a blocked punt that Andrew Albert was able to jump on in the end zone making this game 22-0 within the first five minutes of the game.
McCann Tech did respond in front of its home crowd on Senior Night, taking a kickoff back to the end zone similar to Monument on the first series. It was Aidan Ford with the run that brought them back to within a two-score game.
The high-scoring first quarter continued when Henderson broke one outside for a 52-yard score. Monument had great success running the ball outside and it was no different on this touchdown. Monument would add one more score on the game and to no surprise on the ground with Henderson who took a run outside once again for 75 yards.
“McCann has an aggressive defense so we had to stay out of the teeth of that the best we could,” Monument Mountain coach Chris Tucci said. “We saw some opportunities outside and were able to capitalize, all credit to McCann they gave us everything they had.”
Monument went into the break up 37-6 and never looked back. Henderson scored his fourth of the night with a 65-yard touchdown run. All four of his touchdowns came from outside 50 yards capping off a great day for him and his team.
The defense of Monument that has shown up all season long made a play once again forcing a fumble and setting up the JV offense with good field position. The Spartans were able to get some good minutes for the young guys on the team and they were able to hold their own, not allowing any points and doing a good job controlling the game on the offensive end.
“It’s all about the development of Monument football and really the development of football across Berkshire county allowing opportunities for our young players to get varsity time against quality competition,” Tucci said. “I’m proud of the way they responded. I would have liked some more positive plays for them but they are on the right track.”
After a loss to Lee to start the season the Spartans have bounced back and rattled off four straight wins allowing only six points in that time frame. They will host Pathfinder next in hopes to continue this run.
As for McCann it's back to the drawing board as they search for the first win of the season in the season finale at Smith Vocational on Oct. 28.
