Athlete of the Week: Lane Grogan
The Wahconah Warriors put up a whopping five touchdowns in the first half of a 40-36 home-opening victory over Pittsfield on Friday night. The Warriors had senior captain Lane Grogan to thank for their offensive explosion as the quarterback had a hand in all five of his teams' scores.
Grogan got his team on the board with two minutes to go in the first quarter when he hit junior wideout Darrow Brown for a 29-yard score. He found Brown again for the Warriors' next score on a 36-yard pass and then plunged in from four yards out for his third touchdown. Grogan went back to the air for his fourth score connecting with Brown again on a 9-yard completion.
The quarterback also made his presence known on the defensive side of the ball where he plays as a defensive back. With 31 seconds left before halftime, Grogan picked off a Pittsfield pass and took it 60 yards to pay dirt for his fifth touchdown of the half. That fifth score played a crucial part in Wahconah's victory as Pittsfield made a furious comeback in the second half, only to come up four points short due to Grogan's five touchdown performance.
An honorable mention goes to Wahconah wideout Darrow Brown for catching six of Grogan's nine completions for 146 yards and three touchdowns.
