Hoosac's Eugene, Mount Greylock's Wells Named Athletes of the Week
A cross country runner and a quarterback who runs are this week's iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week as we recognize Mount Greylock's Jacqueline Wells and Hoosac Valley's Vance Eugene.
Freshman Wells had a busy week for the Mount Greylock harriers.
On Wednesday, she took first place at a league meet at Wahconah, finishing 35 seconds ahead of the field and leading a Mounties' sweep of the top five places.
Three days later, Mount Greylock traveled to Queensbury, N.Y., near Glens Falls, to compete in the Queensbury Invitational against 16 New York schools, mostly from the Capital District.
Wells placed 10th in the 5-kilometer race and helped Mount Greylock place fifth as a team.
Back home, she has placed no worse than fourth in any of her three high school races. She has won two of them to start the season, and she has helped Mount Greylock to a 4-1 start in dual meets.
The Hoosac Valley football team is off to a 3-0 start with Eugene under center.
After the Hurricanes knocked off defending Western Mass Champion Westfield, a team that plays five levels above Hoosac in the commonwealth's size classifications, it was a no-brainer that the AOTW would come from Cheshire.
There were a lot of candidates to choose from, but Eugene was the choice after he did it all against the Bombers, throwing for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns, running for a team-high 92 yards and making eight solo tackles and a key second-half interception.
"That's a big win, but we have a lot to work on," Eugene said afterward. "That's what practice is for. We just have to improve every day and keep working hard."
