Logjam at Top of Western Mass Media Poll
PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Four weeks into the season, the top spot in the Western Mass High School Football Media Poll is very much up for grabs.
Five teams -- including one with a 2-2 record -- received No. 1 votes in the latest poll, and just 15 points separate first from fifth place.
Chicopee Comp (4-0) took over the top spot this week, moving up to supplant Springfield Central (2-2), which took its second loss last Friday and dropped four spots to No. 5.
But the team with the most No. 1 votes was Northampton (4-0), which checks in at No. 2 in the rankings.
Two Berkshire County teams, Wahconah (4-0) and Taconic (3-1), are ranked third and fourth, respectively, but each faces a tough test this weekend: Wahconah against seventh-ranked South Hadley (3-1) on Friday night and Taconic at Hoosac Valley on Saturday.
The Hurricanes, by the way, dropped out of the poll this week after slipping to 2-2 on the season with a loss at South Hadley, so did Pittsfield (3-1), which took its first loss against Wahconah. Agawam (3-1) and Longmeadow (1-2) moved into the top 10, ranking ninth and 10th, respectively.
Westfield (3-1) and West Springfield (3-1) are ranked sixth and eighth, respectively, heading into their Friday night meeting.
Three 4-0 teams -- Mount Greylock, Turners Falls and Palmer -- find themselves on the outside of the top 10 looking in despite their perfect records. That trio is in the “others receiving votes” class while a pair of two-loss teams, Springfield Central and Longmeadow, are in the top 10.
The poll, organized by the Berkshire Eagle, includes representatives from the Greenfield Recorder, Daily Hampshire Gazette, Berkshire Courier and iBerkshires.com.
