Each of this week’s iBerkshires.com/Adams Community Bank Athletes of the Week helped their respective teams win a championship this week, but each will be looking for more starting next week.

Lee High senior Anna Wang recorded 29 digs on Monday night to lead the Wildcats to a three-set win over Mount Greylock that avenged an early season loss to the Mounties in Williamstown.

Nights like that are nothing new for the libero, who passed the 1,000-dig mark as a junior.

Lee coach John Warner said that Wang has been a cornerstone of the team’s success in recent years.

“She had three or four digs tonight that were just … it hurts me to watch her sometimes because of the way she contorts,” Warner said. “How she gets that low and gets on that ball, it’s unbelievable.

“She has done that for last four years of her career. She truly is the floor general out there. She makes it happen.”

On Tuesday, Wang and the Wildcats find out their path to get back to the Western Massachusetts Division 3 title game, where last year Lee fell to Frontier.

Lee already has one title under its belt. That win over Mount Greylock secured the ‘Cats a county championship.

There is no more Berkshire County League in high school football.

But the Taconic football team claimed a crown of its own on Saturday when it rolled over Pittsfield in the City Championship game, claiming a berth in the Western Mass D7 semi-finals and a rematch of its own: at Wahconah on Friday night.

Taconic actually trailed early on but took control with three second-quarter TDs, all scored by junior running back Haywood Eurquhart. The first gave Taconic a 14-8 lead en route to a 46-8 win.

On one of those scores, Eurquhart appeared to be stopped cold for a 2-yard loss but broke through a pair of tacklers, regained his balance and went 11 yards to the end zone.

“Ball security was the biggest thing today,” Taconic coach Jim Ziter said of his ballcarriers. “They worked all week. We knew what the weather was going to be. They secured the ball and did a good job.”

Eurquhart finished with 91 yards on the ground, including the three TDs.
