Lee Tops Greenfield on Road
GREENFIELD, Mass. -- Cam Abderhalden threw for 154 yards, including a 40-yard TD to lead the Lee High football team to a 12-6 win over Greenfield on Friday night.
Abderhalden, who also ran for 35 yards, hooked up with Matt Reynolds on a hitch-and-go down the left side to give the Wildcats (2-1) a 12-0 lead on the second play of the fourth quarter.
"I barely saw [the catch]," Abderhalden said. "For a second, I thought he dropped it when he stumbled a little bit, but then I saw him keep running. That was awesome."
"We originally had two receivers over there, and then we motioned one out, so the safety went with him. We had no safety over the top, and the corner was playing just shallow enough where we could bait him on the fake. And then it was green grass."
But Greenfield answered with a 66-yard bomb from Max Pirozhkov on its ensuing possession to cut the lead in half with 6 minutes, 35 seconds to play.
It was the only highlight of the night for the Green Wave against a stingy Lee defense that put in a new wrinkle for the independent game.
"They're a spread team, and we don't see a ton of spread teams up in the Berkshires," Lee coach Keith Thompson said. "They stayed in that spread formation the entire game. That's all they showed in the previous two games. We put in a little bit of a nickel package. We brought some pressure off the edge. We mixed up our fronts, and we were able to get a lot of pressure.
"Tyler Buratto was key. It seemed like he was in [Pirozhkov's] face all night long."
After cutting the lead to six, Greenfield got the ball back twice in the last six minutes, but Lee ended each threat - once on an Abderhalden interception.
Nick Castillo ran for 72 yards to lead Lee's ground attack, and Michael Hurley scored the game's first points on a 9-yard run.
Lee hosts Taconic (2-1) next Friday.
