Donald J. Boyer, 77

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Donald Joseph Boyer, 77, of 63 Elm St. died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at North Adams Regional Hospital. He was a former chairman of the Finance Committee and former member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, and served on the Mount Greylock Regional High School District School Committee from 1975 to 1981. Born in Williamstown on Jan. 27, 1928, son of Hector and Cecelia Reopell Boyer, he attended schools there and took law-enforcement classes at Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield. He was a graduate of the Massachusetts State Police Training Academy in Framingham. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a seaman. He was decorated with the World War II Victory and American Theater medals. Mr. Boyer was an officer with the Williamstown Police Department from 1957 until retiring in 1980. He then obtained a position as a corporate protection and security specialist at the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams. He also was employed as a groundskeeper at Taconic Golf Club for several years. At the time of his death, he was a groundskeeper at Waubeeka Golf Links. He was a life member of St. Raphael's Church and a former member of its Parish Council. He served on the board of the Williamstown Boys' Club, now the Williamstown Youth Center. He also served on the board of directors and coached for the Williamstown Little League and coached youth football and American Legion Baseball in Williamstown. In his younger years, he played semiprofessional football for the Taconic Packers. He enjoyed sports, hunting, playing golf and motorcycling. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife, the former Eileen Boyer, would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary Sept. 13, 2005. They were married in St. Raphael's Church. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Paul J. Boyer and his companion, companion, Sean Joyce, and Robert L. Boyer, all of North Adams, and David J. Boyer of Williamstown; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Boyer; three sisters, Doris Mazza of North Adams and Gertrude McGowan and Madeleine Boyer, both of Williamstown; two grandchildren, Kale Boyer and Chelsea Boyer, and two stepgrandchildren, Erin and Kristin Giulino. He was predeceased by a brother and a sister, Bernard Boyer and Blanche Young. FUNERAL NOTICE - The funeral for Mr. Boyer will be Thursday at 10:15 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Raphael's Church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 8. Memorial donations are suggested for the Williamstown Youth Center through the funeral home.
