Richard Francis Clermont, 80

Richard F. Clermont, 80, of New Ashford, MA, Passes Away, Leaving a Legacy of Love, Music, and Service

Richard F. Clermont, an extraordinary man, a loving father, and a true individual, peacefully passed away at his home on April 8, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 80 years old. Richard’s journey through life was one filled with incredible moments of passion, service, and love. He has reunited with his beloved wife and best friend, Tina, who he married on May 30, 1981. Together, they were a dynamic duo, inseparable in life and now reunited in eternity.

Born on July 21, 1944, in Adams, MA, to the late Noel Clermont and Laurette Kegresse, Richard’s life was a tapestry of diverse experiences, deep love, and unfaltering devotion to his family, his work, and his faith. His passion for life led him on adventures that would take him far and wide, yet his heart always returned to his family and the town he called home.

Richard enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17, where he served aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga (CVA-60) as a radioman, a job that reflected his sharp intellect and love for communication. He completed his service honorably in 1965, transitioning to the U.S. Naval Reserves before leaving the service in 1967. His time in the military shaped much of his character, instilling a sense of discipline, duty, and respect for the world around him.

However, Richard’s legacy is perhaps most richly defined by his love of music and his role as a pillar of the community. A man of unique spirit and profound talent, Richard could always be counted on to be the life of the party, strumming his guitar and singing with a creative energy that lit up every family gathering. His music, ever full of joy and meaning, was a gift to everyone who had the privilege of hearing him perform. His ability to craft songs and lyrics was legendary, and his voice and guitar playing were unmatched, leaving an indelible mark on all who heard them.

Whether he was playing a tune with Arlo Guthrie, an honor he shared often with his children, or sharing a quiet moment with his loved ones, Richard’s music resonated with a sense of depth, authenticity, and an unwavering love for the earth and its people. Often described as a "hippy" for his free spirit and deep connection to nature, Richard was more than just a musician; he was a thinker, a traveler, and a man of great wisdom. His knowledge was vast, and he shared it with a humility that made it all the more powerful. He lived life on his own terms, truly embodying the phrase “live life to the fullest.”

Richard’s contributions to his community were immeasurable. For 25 years, he served as the Chief of Police in New Ashford. Although he was an administrative Chief, Richard took immense pride in his role, especially in supporting the Second Amendment by issuing licenses to carry. He often spoke of the respect he received from the Massachusetts State Troopers at the Cheshire Barracks, relationships that were a source of pride and mutual admiration. Especially since his height during a time of different regulations prevented him from being hired, something we all heard many times over the years.

In addition to his role in law enforcement, Richard had a long and dedicated career at the United States Postal Service in North Adams, where he became affectionately known as “Rural Rich.” His route took him through the Mohawk Trail, where he became a fixture in small communities, known for his kindness, his smile, and his relentless generosity. He kept dog treats in every mailbox, brought joy to every house, and even risked his life during an explosion to rescue a resident. His bravery and dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the Medal of Valor, Carnegie Recognition, and an Achievement Award for Service Beyond Job Requirements.

The most significant part of Richard’s life was his family. He cherished every moment with his wife Tina, his children, and his grandchildren. His love for them was unwavering, and he made it his life’s mission to be present for every important event. He leaves behind his sons, Bob Clermont (Heather) and Amalio Jusino, daughters Alicia Kocsis and Donna Marie Paul, his sisters, Carolyn Bator (Mike), and Lisa Puppolo; as well as his grandchildren, Amelia, Zachary, Alaina, Madelyn, Oliver, Lyla, Isaiah, Hannah, and Thomas, great grandchild Kaimari, and great grandchild on her way Evelyn Marie, each of whom carried a special place in his heart.

He also had a wonderful group of forever friends that shaped his life in such a positive way, his brother-in-law and motorcycle riding partner John Enos, pastoral group Eric and Frank, postal forever friends Lightening and Bob Chesbro, his music family, Joel and Beckie Sartori, and Paul Oleskiewicz.

Richard was a man who truly knew how to live, love, and laugh. His lighthearted spirit, his irreverence, his commitment to his family, and his unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ created a legacy that will never be forgotten. Richard’s life was a testament to what it means to truly embrace every moment with joy, compassion, and creativity. He was an original, a free spirit, and an inspiration to all who knew him.

In his final days, surrounded by his family, Richard left this world peacefully, but his legacy, his music, his laughter, his wisdom, and his love, will live on forever in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

At his request, there will be no calling hours or services, and a Celebration of Life will be on Sunday, April 27, 2025 from 11AM – 5PM at the North Adams Elks Lodge. Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Homes – CENTRAL CHAPEL 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA is entrusted with arrangements. The family suggests donations be made to Pop’s Cares
