Nicola J. "Nick" Trifone, 82

Nicola J. "Nick" Trifone, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after an illness, on Saturday, June 1, in the UMass Memorial Medical Center, University Campus, Worcester.

He was born in Southbridge the eldest child of the late Eustachio "Tiny" and Rita (Mancuso) Trifone.  

He leaves his longtime companion and love of his life of 40 years, Sylvia A. Gamache of Dudley; his siblings, Anthony M. Trifone and his wife Barbara of Dudley, Rita R. Sporbert of North Adams, Leonard A. Trifone of Southbridge, Victoria G. Richards and her husband Paul of Southbridge and Joseph E. Trifone and his wife Janice of Dayville, CT; Sylvia's children, Kenneth G. Gamache and his wife Carol of Mystic, CT, Kim Gamache of Southbridge, Kathleen Gamache of Auburn and Kevin Gamache and his wife Melissa of  Northfield; many nieces and nephews; and his daughter Concetta M. Trifone.  

Nick graduated from the former Mary E. Wells in Southbridge.  After high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served four years stationed in Greenland during the Vietnam War era.  He went on to graduate from North Adams State College.  Nick worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Shrewsbury as a plant steward for many years, retiring many years ago.  He was active Fourth Degree Member of DeTriana Council 199 of the Knights of Columbus in Southbridge. He was also active with the CMAL-APWU and the Southbridge Historical Society.  

Nick was knowledgeable on many subjects and liked to talk a lot about finances, religion, history, government, politics and sports, especially his favorite team the NY Yankees.  He was proud to have met President Kennedy when Kennedy was a US Senator for Massachusetts.  He later worked on some local campaigns.  Nick was a devout Catholic a parishioner of St. Mary's Parish in Southbridge and later St. Louis Parish in Webster.  Nick was also a devoted attendee at the Blessed Sacrament Adoration Chapel in Webster.

His funeral will be held on Friday, June 7th, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, with a Mass at 11:00am in St. Mary's Church of the St. John Paul II Parish, 247 Hamilton St., Southbridge.  Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Southbridge.  Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Thursday, June 6th, from 5:00 to 7:00pm.
