Marguerite "Maggie" Guiden, 98

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Marguerite “Maggie” Field Guiden, 98, a longtime resident of Williamstown died on June 11, 2023 at Williamstown Commons.

Maggie led a life of joy, care, and service. She and her twin sister, Marjorie, were born in Lanesborough, Mass on April 12, 1925 to George and Edith (Young) Field. They had three older sisters: Esther, Dorothy and Madeline. Upon graduating from Pittsfield High School, Maggie worked at General Electric. During this time she met Harold William Guiden of Williamstown. They were married on November 17, 1945 at the South Congregational Church in Pittsfield while Harold was on shore leave from his service in the Navy in the South Pacific.

Upon Harold’s return, they settled in South Williamstown, where they raised four children. Throughout her life, Maggie was an engaged member of the community. She volunteered at school and sports events, hosted and cared for friends and family, and led a successful career in the Business Office at Williams College for three decades.

After Harold passed in 2004, Maggie found community at Proprietors Fields in Williamstown, where she volunteered on the board of local non-profits and fostered friendships with her neighbors. Maggie loved a good game of bingo, cooking dinner for friends, and sharing her knitted and quilted crafts. She will be remembered for her quick wit, love of the Red Sox, and a sweet tooth. In her final years, she was well cared for by the exceptional nursing staff and hospice team at Williamstown Commons. While there, Maggie treasured a special friendship with her caregiver, Brenda Renaud.

Maggie is survived by her children: Jean Richer; Bonnie Clark and her husband, Don; John Guiden and his wife Kris Anderson; and James Guiden and his wife Debbie of Williamstown. She also leaves her grandchildren: Scott Richer (Kate), Kelley Gagnier (Grant), Brad Clark (Katie), Maggie Clark (Trevor Babb), Jesse Guiden (Brittany Burdick), James Guiden II, and ten great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A private graveside ceremony to celebrate the life of Marguerite Guiden will be held at Southlawn Cemetery. Donations may be made to HospiceCare in The Berkshires or the Williamstown Youth Center through the Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Home, Central Chapel, 74 Marshall St. North Adams, MA 01247. Maggie represented so much history of South Williamstown with Field, Young and Guiden family connections. Harold Guiden was our plumber for many years until he retired. Maggie was instrumental in my being hired for wok at Williams when she was asst. to Shane Riorden, business manager. No personnel office way back then. She was indeed a most lively, active and interesting person. Thoughts go to her wonderful children!
