Mabel M. Sorel

CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Mabel Marie (Harvey) Sorel passed away peacefully on May 18, 2023, at the Williamstown Commons and Rehabilitation Center in Williamstown.

Mabel was born in Clarksburg. To Albert and Malvina (Gelinas) Harvey. She grew up on the Musterfield Farm later moving to the Five Roads section of North Adams.

Educated in local schools, she was a graduate of Drury High School Class of 1948. She then went to work at Sprague Electric Company.

In 1949 she married Robert E. Sorel. They lived in North Adams raising their five children until they moved to Clarksburg.in 1963. It was there that she established the "Mother of Twins Club” and served as president of that group.

The house was always alive with young voices. Mabel was a member of the Catholic Daughters and volunteered at school whenever she was asked. She worked at Excelsior Printing until 1972 when a move to Westfield took place. Here Mabel went to work in Retail and was named Manager of the Womens Department at WT Grant Company. When they closed, she worked at Moriaritys Shoe Store. It was not long before an opportunity arose and with the children now grown and gone, they moved to a new home in Scituate.

Here she made many new friends and worked at Wear-Guard. Mabel was an avid reader and sewed many gowns and dresses for her girls.

1987 arrived and her husband retired after 37 years in the Army National Guard. She would miss the Military Balls and the camaraderie of the friends they had made over the 37 years. At this point they moved to Ludlow. Both were actively involved in many different organizations throughout the years.

Mabel joined the Wing Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary, became a Board of Directors member and successfully managed the "Hospital Gift Shop "for many years and was instrumental in the yearly Tree of Love campaign. They spent many summers camping in Addison, V T. on Lake Champlain and took various trips across the country and to Europe.

After Bobs early death in 1995 she found a whole new life with Line Dancing, Swimming, and traveling with friends. She was a active participant at the Ludlow Senior Center and the Wilbraham and Palmer Centers as well.

Mabel leaves four daughters, Sandy Sorel of North Adams, MA., Patricia Leary of Guilford, CT., Cheryl Hicks of Branford, CT., Carol Dawson (Gary) of St. Augustine, Florida and a son Robert Sorel (Robin) of Westfield, MA.
