Jacqueline Patricia (Garand) Armstrong, 81

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Jacqueline Patricia (Garand) Armstrong of Houston, TX died Jan 29, 2023 at the age of 81 after a long battle with cancer. 

Jackie married the love of her life Raymond E. Armstrong, Jr. on June 22,1968 and in 1976 the family moved to Houston where she resided for the remainder of her life.  Her husband preceded her in death on April 15,1999.  

Jackie was born in North Adams on July 20,1941 to the late Henri and Rita (Lavigne) Garand. She attended Catholic schools and Drury High School.  While in  North Adams you may remember Jackie as the first female employee for the North Adams Post Office.  In  Houston, at the age of 50, Jackie earned her nursing degree which she was very proud of and worked for many years as a school nurse at the Tice Elementary School until she retired in May, 2011 at the age of 70.  Her co-workers were more like family to her and kept in close touch even after her retirement.  

She is survived by her two daughters, Suzanne Ferguson (Scott), Diane Bullard (Tom),  and son Daniel Armstrong, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  One brother, Bernard Garand and three nieces, one nephew and two very special cousins, several great nieces and nephews, and a great great niece and nephew as well as many dear friends.  She was also known as Ma to many.

She was predeceased by her daughter Aimee, Sister Jeanne, brothers Roger and John.  

Jackie spent the rest of her life enjoying her family, home, pets and her knitting.  She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family and friends.  

There will be a Celebration of Life for Jackie on Monday, June 5, 2023 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 70 Marshall Street, North Adams, MA at 11:00 am.

I was a college student working at the North Adams Post Office. I remember well when she was hired as the first female employee. She was a very strong of character and always had a smile on her face. She was the perfect person to brake down the barriers.. So sorry for this great loss.
