Margaret Bryant Weyers, 78

POWNAL, Vt. —  Margaret Mary (Grady Bryant) Weyers left us on April 11, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was 78. Peggy was born on August 2, 1944, to James E. and Margaret (Seymour) Grady, the youngest of four and the darling of her older sisters and brother.

Her life began at the Grady Farm on Luce Road in Williamstown, but after her father’s tragic death when she was just 2 months old, she and the family moved in with her beloved grandparents on Water Street, where she grew up. Peggy was a proud member of the first graduating class of the newly constructed Mt. Greylock High School in 1962.  An accomplished musician, she played flute and violin in the band, and was also a candy striper.

Upon graduating, she worked as a ward secretary at North Adams Hospital until she married, later moving to Eastern Massachusetts, where she had her hands full with her four children, the lights of her life. She was a secretary in the pediatrics department of Lowell General Hospital during those years. Peggy eventually brought her kids back to her hometown, and began her long career in administrative support at Williams College. Working mainly in the Anthropology and Sociology departments, she supported professors and students with equal care and efficiency, and was instrumental in organizing major college events including Convocation and Commencement for years with her dearest friend and colleague, Donna Chenail.

A talented pianist, she enjoyed playing the bells at the Thompson Chapel in her spare time. She also moonlighted at the Williams Inn, where she reconnected with her Mt. Greylock classmate John Weyers, whom she married in 1997 and spent many happy years with. Peggy couldn’t seem to find time to retire, and worked well into her 70s. During the COVID pandemic she came to work every day and, alone in the building, kept things running despite her age and compromised health. She finally retired in 2021 at age 76, after 40 years of dedicated service to the College. In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends and tending to her beautiful garden in Pownal. And of course, she continued to care for those around her with remarkable strength and grace, reminding them, always, of the importance of family.

Peggy is survived by her husband John Weyers of Pownal, VT; children Daniel J. Bryant (Andi), John Bryant, Mary Kate Bryant and Jeffrey Bryant, all of Williamstown; and four grandchildren, Amber Pease (Nicholas) of Williamstown, James Bryant (Emily) of North Adams, Justin Bryant of Williamstown and Michael Bryant of Revere, MA. She also leaves a brother James E. Grady (Nancy) of Williamstown, a sister Fredericka Brown of North Adams, four great-grandchildren and a step-great-granddaughter. Additionally, she leaves two step-daughters, Jennifer Barbeau of North Adams and Janet Weyers of Williamstown, NJ, and a step-granddaughter, Katie Barbeau of North Adams. She was predeceased by her older sister Maureen Perkins of North Andover, MA.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours are Wednesday, April 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the West Chapel at the Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Home, 521 W. Main St., N. Adams, and the service is at 1:00 p.m. in Thompson Memorial Chapel at Williams College. Burial will follow in the family plot at Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown. In lieu of flowers, you can honor Peggy by doing good for someone else, or by a donation to the Organization for Autism Research or a charity of your choice. Recollections & Sympathy For the Family

Peggy was, simply, among the best of the best. Where to begin? Well, I knew her at Williams. She was an extraordinary administrative assistant for several departments and programs -- and always of assistance even to faculty who, like me, weren't fortunate enough to have her officially as our admin. And of assistance to students, UPS guys, anyone who needed it. Was there anything Peggy didn't know how to handle, calmly and efficiently? That Peggy was one of the women behind the scenes who really run Williams College -- well, nothing exemplifies that better than her role in Commencement for many years. All that pomp and circumstance doesn't "just happen." For a number of years, Peggy was key to making it happen.

For all that, what I most admired and will miss was Peggy's warm heart. Not that she was a sentimentalist. What a shrewd observer of people! She suffered fools politely (she was always poised and gracious), but she didn't suffer them gladly -- her wry sense of humor was her outlet, much to the delight of those who weren't her targets. She was also forgiving, not least because she herself had known many hardships. Most of all, Peggy enjoyed people, delighted in children, understood when others were trying to juggle all of life's demands....

Peggy (like her friend, Donna) was and remains a model for me, a person I aspire to become like. But she wasn't -- isn't -- simply a model. She's a lovely, wonderful woman I will always miss.

You were an amazing woman who is missed by so many. Until we meet again, we will remember your huge heart & laughter. Most say, "Rest in peace," but I know it's more like, "Rest with laughter & hugs."

John and Family -
We are so sorry to see notice of Peggy's passing and send our
condolences. We are glad to have known you both for many years and to have you work with us at The Inn doing the 'night-owl' shift. We certainly learned a lot from your stories and experiences locally and at the College. Carl and Marilyn Faulkner, The Old Williams Inn

Our sincerest condolences to the family is the passing of their beautiful Peggy. At the young age of 13 and new to Williamstown, I was welcomed into school and escorted to my homeroom class by Peggy who quickly became my very good friend. She went out of her way to make me comfortable in my new surroundings. We had a lot of fun and she will always have a special place in my heart.

Love and prayers to all Peggy's family.....especially Ricky and Jimmy. We all grew up together in Williamstown and the memories of those days are endless. I'm sure her loss leaves a huge hole in the family structure but her children will fill it in tie. As I said love to all of you, Jo
