William A. Hillard, 77

ADAMS, Mass. — William A Hillard of 13 Crotteau Street , Adams passed away at the Cardiac Unit of BMC, Saturday, Feb.11, 2023. He was born in North Adams ,April 3,1945, the oldest son of Gertrude (Aubin) and William E Hillard , of North Adams. He attended St Joseph School, graduating from McCann’s in 1965. He attended Berkshire Community College as well. He was an active member of the community serving as Cub Master to Pack 73 and Group leader in 4H. He worked as a 1st class fireman in Sprague Electric and St. Lukes and later worked for over 35 years for James River, Crown River Corporation where he was part of the Osha and Hazmat team. His interest in Union began as steward there, taking on positions of leadership as secretary and later President of the Papermakers Union, as he negotiated to make better working conditions and better benefits and wages for the working class. As a team member of Osha and Hasmat, he worked to improve work places with chemical free environments. He enjoyed fishing and bowling, photography, country music, birding and cats. He is survived by his wife, the former Cherylene T. Czaja whom he met at a party in 1966. They were married on Aug. 31, 1969 at Notre Dame Church in Adams. He is also survived by his son, William T. Hillard and his wife Winnie of New Zealand and his beloved cats, Muggsy and Pickles. As was his wishes there will be a private service. The Trottier Pringle Funeral home, 6 Summer St. Adams is in charge of arrangements. Donations can be made to the Climate Emergency Fund in care of the funeral home. A Celebration of Life will be celebrated at a later date.

My deepest condolences go out to the Hillard family. While living on River Street in North Adams i grew up with the Billy and the rest of the family. We fished, played ball in the back yard.
