Lawrence C. Jowett, 84
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Lawrence Charles Jowett, 84, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at the family home in North Adams from complications of multiple myeloma.
The son of Charles H. And Rose Blanche Duquette Jowett, he was born in North Adams on April 8, 1938. He attended local schools and graduated from Drury High School in 1956.
After working a few years in the area, he went to work at the House of Walsh in Williamstown. He returned to school and received both his bachelor and master's degrees from North Adams State College (now MCLA). Most of his career was spent in the Adams-Cheshire school system, including 20 years as a guidance counselor at Hoosac Valley High School. He had been retired for many years.
Larry was well known for his athletic endeavors and was proud of his two-hour, 36-minute Boston Marathon time that he ran as a master. An avid competitor in road races, he was known locally as the guy who swam across Fish Pond every day that the weather allowed. Also a cyclist, he was a triathlete, a cross-country skier, kayaker and enjoyed hiking. He was a member of the North Adams Windsor Lake Commission and served as a volunteer with the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition local Christmas program for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Hulda Hardman Jowett, and sons, David L Jowett and Brian A Jowett and his wife, Mea Axt Jowett, and grandchildren Benjamin and Peyton Jowett, all of North Adams; a brother, Gregory Jowett and his wife, Marion Quinn-Jowett, of Williamstown; a sister, Pamela Jowett Ronan and her husband, Michael Ronan, of Northbridge; nephews Christopher Jowett of Williamstown, Sean Ronan of Quincy and Cory Ronan of Charlestown, and a nIece, Colleen Ronan Dupuis of Locust Valley, Long Island, N.Y. He also leaves a son, David Goodhouse of Reading, Vt.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Friends are invited to meet with Larry's family at their home in North Adams on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Interment in the family lot in Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown will be private.
