Frederick D. Moran, 80

ADAMS, Mass. —  

Frederick Dennis Moran of Adams died Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield with his family at his side. He was 80.

Born Nov. 4, 1942, in Springfield, he was the son of Frederick A. and Adele U. (Jegelwicz) Moran and grew up in Chicopee. Later, his family moved to West Springfield.

Fred graduated in 1960 from West Springfield High School and in 1964 from Westfield State College, where he was class president for three years. He earned his master’s in education and administration from Boston University in 1967.

At Westfield State, Fred met his future wife, Marilyn A. Bieniek of Adams. The two married on Aug. 28, 1965.

From 1967 through 1970, he held teaching and administrative positions in school systems in Enfield, Conn., and in Worthington and Lenox.

In 1971, he was named principal of Cheshire Elementary School and served until January 1978 when he was appointed principal of Craneville Elementary School in Dalton. At Craneville, Fred completed the last years of his career as a classroom teacher.

Fred was an avid fisherman. In 1985, he and his family opened Points North Outfitters in Adams. For two decades, Fred taught hundreds to fly fish and guided hundreds more on the Deerfield River. His interests included collecting antique fishing rods and reels and the building and restoration of fly fishing rods. He later worked at the Orvis fly rod factory in Manchester, Vt.

Fred served as an Adams Town Meeting representative. His memberships also included the Adams Lions Club, the Hoosic River Watershed Association and Trout Unlimited’s Taconic Chapter.

Fred is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 57 years, and sons Kevin of Pittsfield, Scott of Adams and Colin of Adams. He leaves a daughter-in-law Melanie Moran and granddaughters Reese, 11, Brixton, 9, and Hanna, 8. He leaves a brother David and his husband Anthony Fusco of West Springfield, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, from the Paciorek Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs Church, McKinley Square, Adams. Burial will be at a later date in the spring. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

"Mr. Moran" was my third grade teacher at Craneville. I will always remember how wonderful he was and how I missed being in his class when it was time to move up to 4th, 5th and beyond. We all adored him. My deepest sympathy to the Moran family.
