Robert Francis "Bob" Verhaeghe, 90

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Robert Francis "Bob" Verhaeghe, 90, of Bennington, formerly of Pownal,  passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2021, at home with his family.  

Bob was the only son of Joseph and Lina (StJohn) Verhaeghe, originally of Floral Park, NY and later North Adams, Mass. 

Bob married his wife of 65 years Marilyn (Rock) Verhaeghe in North Adams on Feb. 11, 1956. They had two beautiful daughters, Wendy A. (Verhaeghe) Varuzzo and Laura J. Verhaeghe both of whom unfortunately predeceased their parents.

Bob worked for the Mass DPW for twenty years as well as operating Bob's Gun Shop in North Adams. Following his retirement from the DPW, the couple moved their residence and the gun shop to Route 7 in Pownal. After closing the shop, Bob and Marilyn wintered in Florida for many years before making the permanent move to Bennington.

Bob served in the US Army, Anti Tank and Mine Platoon, 23rd Infantry Regt., Second Infantry Div. He was deployed to Korea in 1950, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn, a grandson, Anthony Varuzzo; a granddaughter, Gina Varuzzo; and son in law Dennis Varuzzo. 

At the request of the family, services will be private.

So sorry for your loss! My late husband worked with Bob at the DPW many years ago and spoke of him often. May your many memories comfort you at this sad time.
