Janice Selkowitz, 96
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Janice Selkowitz was born, raised and lived in Pittsfield, the city she loved, her entire 96 years. She was a graduate of Pittsfield High class of 1944 and trained at the House of Mercy (now Pittsfield General) as a nurse’s aide and worked for local dentists and pediatricians. In the 1960s, Janice decided to change careers and began selling real estate joining Isgoodrealty where she was among the most successful agents. That was no surprise since not only was Janice extremely capable, she knew almost everyone in Pittsfield. At least that was what we used to say about her.
She was beloved by her countless friends and acquaintances, many of whom she helped over the years. She was known for her empathy, caring, and generosity. Janice was extremely helpful to the many surgical residents who were trained at Pittsfield General, especially the foreign residents from Africa. She made them feel welcome, get settled in Pittsfield and navigate American life.
One of Janice’s greatest lifelong loves was knitting. Her many wool sweaters continue to keep so many kids, both friends and family, warm. Her sweaters have been handed down in the family for three generations. Her afghans continue to keep us cozy at night. We will miss you.
She was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers including Ruth Millowitz, Lillian Holtz, Estelle Pomerantz; Milton Selkowitz, and Larry Laine.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday August 3rd at 11:00 A.M. at the Temple Anshe Amunim section of the Pittsfield Cemetery with Rabbi Liz P.G. Hirsch officiating.
