State Undersecretary Of Energy To Speak March 1912:00AM / Monday, March 12, 2007
Pittsfield - Ann Berwick, Undersecretary of Energy of Massachusetts, will be among the key speakers at a forum on Energy Independence in the Berkshires that will be held on Monday, March 19, from 7 p.m.- 9 p.m., at the Berkshire Community College.
Berkshire Brigades, the county Democratic organization, and Berkshire Community College are hosting the event.
Other speakers include: Professor Bill Moomaw of Tufts University; State Representative Dan Bosley; Laura Dubester of the Center for Ecological Technology; and Tom Stokes of the Climate Crisis Coalition. In addition, the forum will feature two individuals who will respond to the panelists: Michael Supranowicz, Pres., Berkshire Chamber of Commerce and Thomas Tyning, Prof. of Environmental Studies, BCC.
The evening will begin with a performance of "Danger’s Multiplying," a song written and performed by Monument High School Students Aaron Moser and Conor O’Malley.
“Energy is the one issue that cuts across virtually all other issues -- environment and global warming, health, national security, the war in Iraq, and economic policy,†said Sherwood Guernsey, Berkshire Brigades' chair. “Our government won't lead, so we have to, and we believe Berkshirites can show the state and the nation the way.â€
“We will be introducing a program that all Berkshirites can embrace and become involved with," Guernsey said. "Very simply, we will be working with other groups around the county to encourage every household, business, and institution in Berkshire County to swap their traditional electricity-wasting incandescent light bulbs for efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, and we'll have some on sale that night to begin the process.â€
It's a small step, conceded Guernsey, “but there is no one, magic bullet that will end our deplorable addiction to oil and coal and allow us to control our own national destiny and become good stewards of the planet. Let this be our first step on the road to energy independence, and let’s get our schools, PTOs, business organizations, service organizations, conservation commissions, and everyone involved.â€
