Gramercy Bistro Showing Ali Moshiri Art12:00AM / Monday, September 18, 2006
North Adams– Gramercy Bistro, a French-influenced bistro serving creative American cuisine, is currently showing selected works of Amherst-based artist Ali Moshiri in its newly renovated 24 Marshall Street space.
In early September, nine of Moshiri’s canvas works were mounted at the downtown restaurant in a six-month exhibit. All of the works are oils on various media including wood, linen, lead cotton and copper with titles taken from poems by Mary Oliver and Theodore Roethke.
Born in Iran and educated in England and the U.S., Moshiri’s early work had been based primarily on landscape and observations in nature. Over the past 15 years, Moshiri has strived to create paintings that stand on their own merit and not as depictions of anything external.
“Even though every painting ends up having its own life, I wanted to make the panel stand fully and independently on its own, severing all known ties to the outside. In that sense I do not consider my paintings to be ‘abstractions’ of anything external,†stated Moshiri.
“Ultimately the painting should have its own ‘sun and moon,’ its own nature and rules, in the hope of creating an object of beauty, intrigue and stimulation that remains alive, vibrant and moving for a long time,†he added.
Moshiri has been represented by the Ute Stebich Gallery in Lenox and the SKH Gallery in Great Barrington. Selected past solo exhibitions include the Fauve Gallery in Amherst, the Image Gallery in Stockbridge and the Lamont Gallery in Exeter, NH.
In a region that appreciates good food and culture, Ali Moshiri’s art offers the perfect complement to complete an exceptional dining experience.
“Ali Moshiri’s works are a soothing addition to the intimate ambience of Gramercy Bistro and we are excited to feature his works this fall,†said chef-owner Alexander ‘Sandy’ Smith.
Smith has been decorating his walls with artists’ works at his restaurants – including Williamstown’s former Cobble Café and Wild Amber Grill – for more than 15 years.
