GoodWorks Launches Effort To Improve Pedestrian Safety

12:00AM / Wednesday, July 05, 2006

Great Barrington — GoodWorks Insurance, LLC has launched an initiative to install solar-powered crosswalk lights in Great Barrington in an effort to improve pedestrian safety. The project was organized in response to recent concern over traffic and pedestrian activity in the Main Street area.

“We started GoodWorks to provide insurance, but more importantly, to fund education, healthcare and safety causes in local communities where we establish an agency,” said Joseph L. Grochmal, president/CEO and founder of GoodWorks. “Accidents and close calls on Main Street and the recent tragic death of a pedestrian have brought attention to a serious safety issue in Great Barrington. This project should help to provide safer crosswalks and roads for drivers.”

Last week GoodWorks submitted a proposal to the Town of Great Barrington to install solar-powered crosswalk lights at busy and exposed intersections across town.

“The energy efficient lights will help to more prominently alert drivers of crossing pedestrians,” said Grochmal. “They will also provide individuals walking across the street with greater security.”

According to Grochmal, GoodWorks intends to fund a portion of the project with the assistance of other local businesses and community members.

Grochmal said the group of local businesses and individuals that have expressed a strong interest in helping to fund the crosswalk project includes Arbella Insurance Group, Barnbrook Realty, Berkshire Bank, Bill’s Pharmacy, Housatonic Water Works, McCormick Murtagh & Marcus, Robert & Linda Norris, Terry & Monica Webb, and Jack’s Grill.

“It is gratifying to see so many members of the community step forward to fund this cause,” said Grochmal. “It’s a tribute to how much each of these businesses and individuals love this wonderful community.”

GoodWorks in Great Barrington is located at 80 Maple Avenue. The agency provides customers with all lines of personal and commercial insurance, including automobile and homeowners policies, while donating 50 percent of its profits to local community charities.
