One Car Crash Claims LifeBy Susan Bush 12:00AM / Sunday, November 27, 2005
North Adams – A Nov. 26 mid-afternoon one-car collision claimed the life of a 2005 Charles H. McCann Technical High School graduate.
Kevin E. Trombley, 18, of 54 Prospect St. was killed when the 2005 Dodge Stratus he was driving west along the Mohawk Trail [Route 2] veered off the road, struck a utility pole and flipped over, according to police. Police said that Trombley was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Police said that Trombley was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Trombley was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The car was totaled during the crash and was towed from the scene by the Sayers’ Auto Wrecking service.
City police, firefighters, the North Adams Ambulance Service, and the Berkshire County medical examiner were at the accident scene.
An investigation into the accident is on-going and police declined comment on whether vehicle speed or road conditions contributed to the crash. Information available on the city police log states that a police dispatcher contacted the Massachusetts Highway Department and reported slippery road conditions about one hour after the 3:50 p.m. accident. MassHighway oversees the maintenance, including plowing and sanding, of Route 2.
The crash occurred just to the east of the Mohawk Forest apartment complex.
Bennington, Vt. Man Arrested
An early morning Nov. 26 crash led to charges being filed against a Williamstown man and the arrest of a Bennington, Vt. man.
Steven M. Diamond, 26, of 1205 North Hoosac Road, Williamstown was driving a 2001 Saab west along Massachusetts Avenue at about 12:50 a.m. when the car crossed lanes, spun around, and struck a utility pole.
Diamond was taken to the North Adams Regional Hospital by the North Adams Ambulance Service. He was treated and released. Diamond is being summonsed to the Northern Berkshire District Court on one charge of leaving the scene of a property damage accident, second offense drunk driving, negligent driving, and speeding, according to police.
A passenger in the car, 43-year-old Ernest E. Carpenter, of 231 Bradford St., Bennington, Vt. was arrested and charged with possession of a Class D drug. Carpenter will be arraigned at the Northern Berkshire District Court at a future date.
The car was totaled during the crash and was towed from the scene by Sayers’ Auto Wrecking Service, police said.
Sunday Morning Roll-Over
A Nov. 27 one-vehicle rollover accident was caused by slick roads and speed, according to police.
Police said that Erick R. Schmehl, 21, of 11 Linden St. Williamstown, was driving a 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck west along Massachusetts Avenue at about 12:11 a.m. when he attempted to turn left onto Demond Avenue. The truck rolled over as Schmehl was making the turn, police said.
Schmehl was not injured during the crash and was cited for driving at a speed unsafe for the driving conditions, police said. The vehicle sustained damage and was towed from the scene by Dean’s Quality Auto and Wrecker Service.
Cold Temperatures Disable Log Truck
Travel along Canal Street was briefly impeded at about 6:07 p.m. on Nov. 25, when partially frozen vehicle fuel rendered a fully-loaded logging truck helpless. Police said that due to the frigid, 10-degree air temperature, diesel fuel “gelled†inside the truck’s fuel lines, which caused the truck to stop in the middle of the street. The truck driver was able to move the vehicle to the side of the road and traffic was then able to pass the vehicle. The truck was able to continue on its way at about 6:45 p.m., police said.
